Firefighters warn of risks after tower block death
Firefighters have warned people to reduce fire risk in their homes after a council tenant died in a tower block blaze in Bristol.
Residents in the block were evacuated and 44 firefighters stopped the fire spreading from the seventh floor flat, after 30 calls to the blaze, which broke out on Saturday morning.
Group manager of Avon Fire & Rescue, Harry Awramenko said, "Fires in high rise blocks do present unique challeneges, but the early actions fire crews took on Saturday were instrumental in preventing this serious fire from spreading beyond one flat, putting further lives at risk."
He added, "This incident is a stark remind to us all to take steps to reduce risks in our own homes."
Bristol City Council confirmed one of their tenants, aged 61, had died.
A council spokesperson said, "Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this tragic incident and we continue to co-operate with emergency services as they investigate the cause of the fire.
"Our efforts are currently focused on assisting residents directly affected by the fire."
