Deadly Legionella Bug on the Rise, 1.5 million households
could be affected.
Each year there is around 350 cases of legionella across
England and Wales, with bacteria manifesting in poorly maintained water and air
conditioning systems. Research has revealed that up to 1.5 million households
across the UK could possibly be harbouring the deadly bug in showers. The bug causes
legionnaire’s diseases, which could potentially result in pneumonia and organ
failure.
The deadly disease is normally
linked to larger buildings, such as hotels and office blocks. This is because
they commonly have complex water systems where it is easier for bacteria to
spread. However, scientists at Public Health England have found that legionella
is on the rise in domestic homes.
A report from a utility learning provider Develop Training
Limited (DLT) suggests that many public spaces and workplaces are at risk. It is vital
that facilities managers are conscious of the dangers, and have an effective
process and training programmes in place to mitigate them.
Steve Braund, who is a marketing manager at DLT said:
“Many cases of Legionnaires’ Disease go unnoticed as the symptoms are so similar to common pneumonia but that does not make the disease any less deadly. It is important for organisations to remain vigilant of the dangers posed by the disease and to make sure they been trained to put the proper checks in place. Advances in training and compliance make it easier to implement effective systems, and facilities managers and public building owners should take advantage of these.”
