UK CEOs see health and safety as next big challenge for employers

Health and safety may seem trivial to many employers, but according to top UK chief executives it is the next big challenge they face.

This was the opinion of many of the speakers at the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health's 2014 conference, which was held at the ExCeL London on 17th and 18th June.

Paul Hackett, chief executive of housing association AmicusHorizon said, "Wellbeing is the next big frontier. All responsible companies are involved in wellbeing programmes, but I do feel we are scratching the surface."

Other issues raised included the idea that health and safety does not cost businesses money, as it is an investment that boosts their reputation and therefore increases custom. Ignoring it can also cost money in fines and compensation.

Companies should not skimp on features such as safety signage or other equipment designed to protect the wellbeing of their employees, as it is well worth the cost.
