The Star: Apprentices are on the way to top jobs.

Apprenticeships are taking Yorkshire employees all the way to the top, according to City & Guilds.

Research carried out on behalf of the training and qualifications group by the National Apprenticeship Service and Personnel Today found 26% of employers in Yorkshire and The Humber currently have former apprentices working in boardroom level positions compared with 19% of employers nationally.

Nationally, apprentices in the construction industry stand the best chance of becoming a director, followed by manufacturing and engineering, agriculture and energy.

The research highlight businesses that have proved themselves to be the very best workplaces in the country for apprentices to start and build a successful and fulfilling career.

"Through learning on the job, apprentices develop skills which are directly relevant to how our business works. They know the organisation inside out, which brings huge benefits when making business decisions and managing people. This is why so many employers have entrusted senior management positions to former apprentices."

At Compliance365, more than half of the employees are under the age of 25. We currently employ 3 apprentices: Amy Williams and Scarlet Lisle, who joined the company as Customer Services Assistant; and Sophie Hodgson as Accounts Assistant.

Managing Director, Malcolm Wallis, said: "From the very beginning it has been important to me as an employer to be able to invest in and give young people the opportunity to prove themselves and take the first step on the career ladder. There is a huge pool of talented young people out there who have skills and ambition but they are a generation at risk of being 'lost' because of events beyond their control. Employing apprentices means that we can help their careers and develop the skills that we need to grow our business further.

"Investing in our people is at the heart of our strategy and our commitment to supporting our staff through apprenticeships and further work-based training forms part of this."
